With the pandemic almost behind the world, our cities have been plagued with more instances of “unhoused neighbors” (as the city of Seattle City Council likes to refer to being homeless). In Seattle, the tents and makeshift “homes” tend to be the norm, especially downtown.
I went to a Mariners Game on Weds and walking from where I had parked, we had to walk through the mini tent city under Edgar Martinez Drive and boy was the situation appalling. I counted 15 rats hovering outside of one person’s tent….and for a minute, I put myself in their situation…and couldn’t even imagine the horror of having to fend off rats while also battling mental illness, a drug addiction or catastrophic family loss…I’m not sure how strong I could be in that situation.
So, being reactive, I phoned the city to report an unhealthy, potential public safety hazard for all involved. I called to report pests, and was greeted with a YEAH ?, from the woman who answered the phone. I informed her I wanted to report rat infestation under Edgar Martinez drive. She immediately informed me that she needed to get some water and would be back….5 minutes later…..i ended hanging up. To be honest, the lack of professionalism didn’t shock me for I receive services from the VA (abrupt, rude and entitled lot they are).
What is so shocking is the lack of problem solving even attempted by the city to fix the problem. To just walk by and not say anything to our city council’s lack of responsibility reflects what politics have evolved into….a partisan game where politicians cater only to their personal agendas. For Tammy Morales, City Council District 2, she focuses solely on minorities, drug addicts and enabling rampant drug use by catering to keeping them clean…and “unhoused.”
Its time these people are called on the carpet for their lack of accountability in this decline of the spirit of Seattle. Tax payers are nickel and dimed for their hard earned $$$ but the services the city provides are dwindling down to next to nothing. Graffiti cleanup? No. Ushering those who are mentally ill off the streets for public safety reasons? Fail. Unfortunately, the city won’t be doing anything as long as they can soak themselves in our tax dollars and get away with murdering Seattle.
